Welsh Moves Forward to Tactical Strategy

Forward Management welcomes a macro strategist and portfolio manager to its investment team.

Jim Welsh, who joined the San Francisco-based firm in June 2012, will now serve as a tactical strategist, co-managing the Forward Tactical Enhanced Fund. He will also provide input on other, new investment strategies developed at Forward.

Welsh is well-known for his Macro Tides newsletter, former known as The Financial Commentator. He will now author a monthly newsletter called Forward Markets: Macro Strategy Review.

The fund is an alternative equity mutual fund that seeks to outperform the S&P 500 Index by considering conditions such as policy, investor sentiment and market breadth to manage its market exposure and minimize downside volatility.

"Investors by now are all too aware that their investments can be impacted by Washington or Beijing as much as what happens on Wall Street," said chief executive officer Alan Reid. "Bringing someone of Jim’s caliber to the firm is our signal to investors that we take the potential impacts of macro events on their portfolios seriously."

"I am excited to work with the investment team here to continue to expand Forward’s global investment footprint while at the same time offering our investors access to tactical strategies that may help them better reach their goals than the traditional buy and hold approach," Welsh said.

Prior to Forward, Welsh managed client accounts at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Prior to that, he ran his own investment firm, Welsh Money Management, based in Carlsbad, Calif.

Forward managed more than $5.7 billion as of Dec. 31, 2012.
