Morningstar to Build DB On Hedges, Private Equity

Morningstar has announced plans to create a global hedge fund and private partnership database.

The initiative responds to market demand for practical hedge fund information and analytics, the company said. The database is to include participating funds' investment strategies, performance data, portfolio manager information and operations data.

Morningstar plans to complete the hedge fund database this year.

According to a report earlier this week from Tass, owned by Tremont Capital Management, the industry nearly reached $750 billion in assets worldwide. Meanwhile, the SEC continues to grapple with how much transparency is needed in hedge funds (see MME 1/27/04).
