Simplify's Harley Bassman on the case for convexity in choppy markets

Is winter's final stretch getting you down? Do you seek an escape from the harsh, frigid conditions on Wall Street?

Then allow Financial Planning to transport you back to the dog days of summer and directly into the heart of Surf City.

Take a special look back at the Future Proof Festival through a series of interviews with insiders and newsmakers conducted by the Financial Planning editorial team.

This clip features Harley Bassman, who is both a managing partner with New York-based active ETF firm Simplify Asset Management — and an alternative investing expert who goes by the nickname "The Convexity Maven." Bassman told FP Chief Correspondent Tobias Salinger how hiss firm is pitching financial advisors on the appeal of options-based strategies during t marketn  volatility. The word "convexity" refers to the degree of difference between bond prices and yields when the curves are compared on a graph. That spread often varies based on interest rates.

Bassman explained the concept in full detail during a discussion about the alternative ETFs issued by Simplify, which he said had topped $1.5 billion in client assets after its launch in 2020. Amid turbulence in stocks and bonds over the last 15 months, some experts argue that complex alternative investments may help financial advisors find greater yields.
